Index-Card-J-49-08 DEH Consciousness of inadequacy, lack, unwholesomeness — a prelude to growth to completeness. The self-satisfied man is half-dead.
Index-Card-J-49-16 DEH Science, taken as it is & by itself is useful. It has led to mastery of natural forces. But its effect upon our emotional & intellectual lives has been incredibly shallowing, de-vitalising, falsifying. Popular science is ludicrously untrue. The primitive who personifies the sun, or hears Thor in the thunder, lives in a world that is in many vital respects more realistic than our amputated, abstracted world.
