Visible Gods: excerpt from the original typescript

In The Visible Gods, Harding’s Socrates shows his modern friends that science unveils the same basic universe as the ancient ‘primitive’ Greeks inhabited. Instead of revealing a dead cosmos containing rare accidents of life, with humans at the top of the tree, science reveals a living cosmos with humans only half way up the tree—we are cells in the tremendously alive, greater bodies of Life, the Earth, the Sun and the Galaxy. In traditional terms, above us reign suprahuman beings of fabulous majesty and power the visible gods. The challenge we moderns face is to put aside our ‘commonsense’ prejudices and preconceptions about the universe and see—and accept—the evidence of science.
